Looking to the future:

lavie and Sustainable Textiles Switzerland 2030

lavie has signed up to the sustainable targets of Sustainable Textiles Switzerland 2030.With our commitment, we pledge to implement measures to ensure the STS targets are achieved by 2030. The four targets we will achieve by 2030 are:

1. Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions

2. Promotion of fair wages and humane working conditions for all

3. Promotion of innovative business models toward a circular economy

4. Transparency to ensure that sustainable purchasing decisions can be made

These four targets were formulated based on the UN’s SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and reference the goals 8, 12, 13 and 15 in particular. The entire programme is also underpinned by goal 17.

Target 1: Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions

In pursuit of Target 1 (based on the SDGs 13 and 15), we teamed up with myclimate in 2023 to monitor our own emissions (Scope 1 and 2) as well as those in our supply chain (Scope 3). The infographic from myclimate shows the areas covered by Scope 1, 2 and 3.

Based on this data, we are now developing measures to help us reduce our emissions. Here, the focus is on Scope 3 in particular – the area with the greatest potential for improvement, Scope 3 also poses the greatest challenges for us. We aim to have the course of action finalised with myclimate and published by the end of 2024.

Target 2: Promotion of fair wages and humane working conditions for all

Certain aspects of Target 2 (based on the SDGs 8 and 17) are covered by our existing certifications, specifically by GOTS andbioRe® Sustainable Cotton . Nevertheless, we still have lots of potential for improvement.

The updated criteria from the Global Organic Textile Standard – or GOTS – came into force in March 2024 with Version 7.0. With our GOTS-certified products, we also fulfil the criteria of the second target of the STS 2030, which shows that we are on the right track to meet the target.

In addition to organic cultivation and non-GMO seeds, the Swiss quality label bioRe® ensures socioeconomic stability for cotton farmers. The company Remei, the initiator of the bioRe® quality label, purchases the cotton directly from the farmers or agricultural cooperatives and pays an additional premium above the official market price. Remei is committed to an annual purchase guarantee so the cotton farmers can make plans on the basis of this income.

Since the summer of 2023, most of our newly developed cotton products from lavie are labelled with the bioRe® seal of quality. The existing cotton products from previous collections are gradually being adapted to meet the bioRe® criteria.

Target 3: Promotion of innovative business models toward a circular economy

We have taken a range of steps towards achieving Target 3 (based on the SDGs 12 and 17). lavie has been a member of the Circular Clothing Cooperative, since the very beginning, a cooperative dedicated to promoting circular textile products..

At the end of 2023 we set a milestone with our made to last collection, launching our first circular products. What’s more, the decorative cushions and chef’s aprons have also been awarded theCradle To Cradle Certified® Gold certification.

We are working together with other actors in the textile and recycling industry to find circular solutions for textiles. Alongside other approaches, closing the loop can mean recycling and upcycling old textiles to produce new fibres.

Target 4: Transparency to ensure that sustainable purchasing decisions can be made

By 2030, 90% of the Swiss textile and clothing industry will disclose information on social and environmental sustainability and help raise awareness among consumers and bulk purchasers.

lavie is working together with retracedto achieve this target. Retraced is a blockchain-based software designed to help us break down and analyse our supply chains. By gradually compiling our collection on retraced, we are making it possible for our customers to follow every product back to its origins.
