Hemp is also great for the environment and the plant has a really impressive life cycle assessment
Hemp on your heart
How the natural fibre conquer(ed) the markets.
Hemp can do a lot! And far more useful than clouding your head. Hemp can be used to produce various things such as food and animal feed, cosmetics, biomaterials, building materials, energy – and of course textiles. Good for us, hemp is also good for the environment, as the plant has an extremely impressive eco-balance. According to one study, hemp yields three times more than an average cotton crop. According to the European Industrial Hemp Association, it also requires 75% less water than cotton – both for cultivation and processing. Hemp is also CO2-negative: the plants grow quickly and tall, so that considerable amounts of carbon are stored through photosynthesis. The plant has hardly any natural pests, so there is no need for insecticides.
Markus and Daniel Freitag: Hemp fibres are durable
But it’s not just Snoop Dogg who knows about the benefits; the plant has been used for ages and was widely used generations before us. Evidence dates back to around 2800 BC. Due to its properties, hemp fibres were used to make sailing cloth, ropes and hemp ropes – for Columbus’ ships, for example – until well into the 20th century. The glamorous times were followed by a brief decline, and the plant was displaced by industrialisation and the emergence of more modern and cheaper fibres. The hemp industry in Europe suffered a setback, or rather a collapse. In most European countries, the cultivation of hemp became illegal – in some cases to this day. Fortunately, the beautiful plant is slowly regaining the spotlight today.
